I chose the words 'furniture transformation' carefully, because this is what I endeavor to do when I get my hands on an old piece of furniture. While furniture restoration is commonly understood to mean bringing a piece back to the way it was when it was manufactured, my goal is to make it something better than it ever was and distinguish it from the largely low-quality furniture that is so prevalent today. And this only happens when you approach the project with certain principles in mind, all of which are pretty basic: 1) select a quality-made piece; 2) make sure it serves a practical purpose; 3) ensure it can be transformed; and 4) look for good design.
When these elements are present, I know I can bring my vision to life. This starts with the question "what makes the most sense for this particular piece of furniture?" Will it come back to life best with stain, paint, specialty oil, some combination of these…is the hardware salvageable with polishing and cleaning…does the veneer need repair or touch-ups? Regardless of what these realities are, there will be many steps of careful and painstaking prep before moving on to the elements that people can see.
